dentist thinkingIf you have been in practice for several years, I am willing to bet that you do not consider yourself the same dentist you were when you first began.

Can you say the same thing about your practice?

What I mean is, when you started out, you probably took the time to establish the protocols, procedures and systems that would drive the practice simply because you had more time back then. You wanted to get things right, or at least what felt right to you, back then.

Then you got busy.

Practice life became more about just keeping up with the flow. You may have grown a lot as a dentist through experience and through new clinical education, but for the most part those same protocols remained in place. They have become entrenched as the way we do it.

Maybe it's time for a re-boot. Maybe it's time to look at the key functions of your practice—things like how you approach scheduling, new patient exams, hygiene appointments and team roles. Then you need to ask yourself an important question: "If I started all over again, knowing what I know now, is this still the way I would do it?"

If the answer is no, it's time for a shake-up. It's time to hit that reset button and bring your practice in line with what you know to be right today.

I just did it. I decided to make a change due to a divorce and bitter ex. So I gifted my dental practice to her as part of the alimony deal. I went down the street 7 miles and have built the dream that I have wanted to do for a long time but felt kind of trapped where I was in the same routine. Now I am feeling fresh new and excited.

Chris, inspiring reflection. You may end up colleagues one day! The relationships in my professional life guided me through an ugly one too! Lessons continue to be learned. Thank goodness for elevating out of morass gifted with this incredible proffession within which we exist. Congrats, Sam...

Reboot is a great reward! I have had the honor to assist several practices with small to major reboots. I love to see the eye wakening joy of the dentist and staff as they make the transformations! Often watching a team with doubts turn into a team saying look what we've done...dream team and skies the limit! Love and trust yourself, your practice & your team enough to change!
