New Spear Online Course: When To Cover Cusps: A Biomimetic Approach to Posterior Teeth

This new Spear Online course will help you understand when it’s necessary to cover up compromised cusps with onlays

Spear Education recently added a new course to Spear Online called When To Cover Cusps: A Biomimetic Approach to Posterior Teeth.

In this course, Spear Resident Faculty member Dr. Jason Smithson explores what happens to teeth under occlusal load and which structural elements are critical to the tooth’s long-term survival.

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand how occlusal stress is transferred from the opposing tooth through the enamel and dentin, and out to the periodontal ligament in an intact tooth.
  • Explore how the peripheral rim reduces cuspal flexion and is critical to the longevity of the tooth, and how to conserve the rim with new approaches to a tunnel restoration.
  • Learn how the Rainey ridge and Rainey web structurally cross-brace the peripheral rim and stop it from fracturing.
  • Explore how lamellae release stress within the enamel and how knowledge of their presence has an impact on modern caries diagnosis.
  • Understand the parameters to consider when thinking of overlaying cusps.
