SPEAR STUDY CLUBS

INTERDISCIPLINARY EXCELLENCE

Spear Study Clubs are a practical method to the interdisciplinary team approach to treatment, which is the key to excellence – and shared success – in dentistry. The clubs are the brainchild of renowned double specialty (periodontist and prosthodontist) esthetic and restorative dentist and educator Dr. Frank Spear. He has been phenomenally successful in teaching specialists and general dentists how to work together to deliver comprehensive interdisciplinary restorative and esthetic dentistry, and create value added relationships.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

THE GROUP

As a Spear Study Club leader, you’ll hand-select at least five restorative dentists to form your group. Through seminar attendance and collaboration on interdisciplinary cases, you’ll truly take clinical skills and relationships to a new level.

SPEAR SEMINAR

The group will attend a 2½ day Spear seminar, where you’ll be motivated and energized by Frank Spear and other noted dental professionals. Choose from Mastery Level Esthetics, Demystifying Occlusion or Treating the Worn Dentition.

CASE STUDIES

The heart of the study club program is a carefully structured clinical agenda including eight fully documented interdisciplinary case studies for use at meetings. You’ll create treatment plans and work through interactive DVD supported presentations, narrated and directed by Dr. Steve Ratcliff.

MATERIALS AND RESOURCES

One hour of coaching via telephone with study club expert Dr. Steve Ratcliff, a highly trained restorative dentist and expert in adult learning. He knows how to create small group learning experiences that work! A turnkey manual will help you administer your study club with minimized time and effort and maximum impact.

ANNUAL EVENT

Study club leaders attend an annual event with Frank Spear and other premier speakers, including Drs. Vince Kokich, and Dave Matthews. Study Club Testimonials

“The Spear Study Club educational concept is a unique and exciting way to share diagnosis and treatment skills with your restorative dentists.

This eight-session program provides a unique opportunity for an orthodontist to invite up to seven dentists to collaborate in complex cases in a comfortable environment. Steve Ratcliff moderates case history and treatment outcomes that have been already completed by outstanding dental teams.

The educational methodology allows each participant to share their own approach to patient care, and at the same time stretch their comfort level in diagnosing, presenting and treating cases.

If you are a specialist and want to develop a truly ‘collaborative’ interdisciplinary team approach to comprehensive patient care, this study club is for you.”

— Straty Righellis D.D.S.
Oakland, Calif.

“Over the past 10 years, I have spent much of my free learning time following Frank Spear. The Spear Study Club is another piece of that learning, and it’s right here with people in my local community. The best part is learning from everyone in the group, seeing things through different eyes. The cases are well-documented and very interesting, and there is enough in each case to engage everyone in the group. They also set the standard for what is needed as we bring our own cases to the group.

Often times the greatest growth and learning opportunities are right in front of you.”

— Tim Jacobson, D.D.S.
Saint Cloud, Minn.

“As a periodontist, the Spear Study Club has provided me a great monthly opportunity to learn, understand and share treatment ideas with general dentists.

The approach of Dr. Frank Spear has helped our group to use the strategy that he developed over the years, and also coalesce around a methodology of care that is applicable to any case.

It was great to use the monthly comprehensive cases narrated by Dr. Steve Ratcliff as a foundational example of how we approach our own cases. As a general dentist, Steve was very open about the management of the example cases. He even invited us to differ with how his cases were treated. However, we agreed on the conceptual development of the plan. This was awesome!

We learned that the Spear concept is a linier, integrated algorithm of setting goals of treatment that is a soup-to-nuts point of view. The biggest revelation for us was that we could plan all cases comprehensively, but also provide as much care as the patient wants. We have concluded that the Spear approach of progressing through esthetics, function, structure and biology is the ‘golden lens’ that all planning could be viewed.”
