Spear is kicking off a series of courses that will combine hands-on training with digital learning.

The first Pathway, "Excellence in Anterior Composite Restorations," is scheduled to be released Oct. 10.

"Dentistry is tactile profession," said Dr. Gary DeWood, Spear's executive vice president of curriculum. "What we're hoping to do is add another dimension to what is available from an online dental CE platform."

In the anterior composite restorations course, which will be taught by Dr. Vargas, Spear members will have the ability to build a custom shade guide that they can use in their practice as soon as they've completed the lessons.

The first lessons of Vargas' course will cover the properties of composite, color matching methods and other composite restoration concepts.

The theoretical discussions will be followed up with a hands-on lesson in which Vargas will walk viewers through creating a custom shade guide. What is different here than most online dental continuing education platforms is that members will actually be able to have the shade guide components sent directly to their practice so they can create it right along with Vargas.

Once they've completed this hands-on lesson, members can view a follow-up course to learn how to affectively shade match natural teeth. Finally, the curriculum will conclude with step-by-step lessons to help dentists successfully complete esthetically pleasing composite restorations.

"With these hands-on/digital courses, we're following the idea that knowing how to do something – and actually practicing it with an instructor – is as important as knowing why," said DeWood.

Spear members will be notified when the course is available on Spear's Course Library. Non-members can get a free demo of Spear Online to learn more about the platform.
