Surround Yourself With the Right People
Now we get to my final mindset resolution for 2013—and this one may be my favorite.
Resolution #5: I am going to surround myself with people who bring out the best in me.
Remember how your parents were always eager to make sure you made friends with the right crowd?
If you’re a parent you no doubt have the same concern for your kids. It’s because we know instinctively that people tend to absorb the values and the culture of the peers they choose to be with. And you want your kids to be absorbing the right stuff.
But it’s just as important as an adult to surround yourself with the right influences. You can give yourself such a boost and make your life so much more fun and meaningful just by being around people who recognize your true value and who share your aspirations and your passion. When you are surrounded by people who are curious and excited about their possibilities, and who are obviously enjoying their journey, you can’t help but be inspired to match their enthusiasm.
Personally, I know I have always been affected by the energy of the people around me, so I have purposefully sought to surround myself with those who lift me up. It’s why I wanted to partner with Dr. Frank Spear; someone I knew had a tremendous level of passion and commitment for his profession. I want to be around people like this because they make me better.
Then there are the dentists who make up our faculty and the executives who form our leadership team—they all bring out the best in me, Frank and in each other. They expect the best from us and they drive us to new levels of success. This is the philosophy behind our Faculty Club and Study Club initiatives too: Creating a community that influences everyone within it to be better than they would be on their own.
Make it a resolution this year to spend more time off “the island” of your practice within the company of people who energize you. Get out to workshops. Join a Study Club. Visit our Digital Campus and jump into the discussions on our forthcoming forums. I see it all the time when I watch participants here at the Spear campus enthusiastically sharing ideas and feeding off each other’s energy. This exhilaration comes from being around other people who share your passion and who inspire you to be the best you can.
We all know that the people in our lives can have a profound effect on our spirits. Surround yourself with the right people and you will always find the lift you need to reach the next level.
Imtiaz, surrounding myself witht the right people has made such an impact in my life. Just over the last few years as I have emabarked on the Spear Journey, I can directly see the positive change in my practice, attitude, confidence, and overall life. The faculty, staff, and all the dentists I have met there, have helped me realize my potential and given me the confidence to take the steps towards fulfilling it. In turn, It has energized me to give back and do the same for all the new dentists I meet….
