Blogging – A Sign of the Changing Times

May 29th, 2009 by Frank Spear

In this world of social networking and communication it seems appropriate that we should have a Spear Blog – a "what are Frank and our faculty thinking about?", if you will. Since this is my first blog, I am at this moment wondering the same things anybody is when they do something new. Am I doing it right? Is it too long or too short? What should I write about? You know, the insecurity stuff all us dentists have about being adequate and perfection.

As to what I am thinking about these days…it is change. I am aware that the world and specifically our country are changing very rapidly, and I wonder what that will mean to Charlene and me, to my students, and to dentists in general.

I just finished reading an article titled "The Rise of Digital Imaging and the Fall of the Old Camera Industry" on one of my favorite photography websites. The author writes about Hasselblad, long recognized for their precision-built medium format film cameras. He talks about the new building they moved into in Gothenberg, Sweden in 2003, an elaborate masterpiece of architecture, only to move out one year later in 2004 amid layoffs and near bankruptcy. They knew digital was coming, had even created their own 6mp digital camera in 1996, but because the quality couldn’t match their medium format film camera they dropped the digital development team. Only when facing bankruptcy again in 2005 did they merge with digital imaging company Imacon and were able to sell a Hasselblad digital system, but that was after other companies like Canon and Nikon had several years head start on the digital marketplace.

How Hasselblad got into trouble was by believing that their core competence of making magnificent lenses and mechanical analog film cameras would always be enough. In other words, they didn’t think change would occur.

I wonder in dentistry, which core competencies that we hold onto dearly will be outdated as our world changes? And I am sure the change will happen, which is why I am now a blogger.

Serving vs. Selling

May 26th, 2009 by Steve Ratcliff

I just returned from my son’s wedding in the Dominican Republic. They moved the whole shootin’ match from Mexico after the flu scare threatened to turn the ceremony into a much more private affair than they hoped for. The resort company was gracious enough to simply switch all the reservations and move everyone’s flights. Service excellence at its best!

We found upon arrival, that the resort we were now staying at was doing a “soft” opening. That means that every experience was a test drive for the staff and unfortunately for the guests as well. It did not go well and we were frustrated on a daily basis by poor service and lack of response to our frustration. At the same time we were the guinea pigs, they were hard selling us to buy into their vacation club!

What a wonderful – and sadly missed – opportunity to create fans for life! Had they simply told us up front what was happening, offered some consideration for helping them excel and omitted the sales pitch until the bugs were worked out, we would have loved them forever! But they didn’t – they missed the chance to capitalize on their situation through good service and communication. (Good thing they got the wedding day right.)

I also learned this lesson in my practice. I was always trying new procedures and techniques. When I was up front with people they loved being part of our learning. People want to help us get better at what we do, they want to be included and they enjoy being asked for their help. Reward them for their loyalty and trust, use your imagination…notes, dinner at a great restaurant, fee considerations and most of all, copious thanks.

SPEAR WEEK APRIL 2009

May 6th, 2009 by Spear Education

April 27 – May 4, 2009 marked the first Spear Week of 2009, and in short, it was AMAZING!

Over 300 doctors descended upon the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry to participate in seminars and courses featuring Drs. Frank Spear, Gary DeWood and Lee Ann Brady. Special appearances were made by Seattle-based prosthodontist Dr. Greggory Kinzer and practice growth expert Imtiaz Manji.

The week was a compendium of knowledge, with two Facially Generated Treatment Planning courses, an Occlusion workshop and a Treating the Worn Dentition seminar taking place throughout the week.

The overall atmosphere was one of excitement, and Scottsdale Center was abuzz with knowledge, from lecture halls to labs to impromptu gatherings on the patios. The instructors delivered inspiring, practice-changing education, further raising the levels of clinical and patient care excellence for all who attended.

Participants enjoyed the temperate late April weather, and many of them walked over from their rooms at the Fairmont Princess resort adjacent to Scottsdale Center. Attendees and faculty wound down with friendly conversation, drinks and appetizers at a Friday afternoon casual get-together.

The week couldn’t have gone any better, and we look forward to the next Spear Week!
